Cinque donne a Trebisacce

16 September 2013

Ciao!

Under generous sunshine by the Ionian Sea we have completed our first work day in Trebisacce. At the laboratorio il Dottore Andrea and his assistants Sara and Natalia

introduced us to the Middle Bronze Age and more recent periods in this area, mainly Broglio. The findings, both originals and copies were used to illustrate different household items. By cleaning recently found pieces of ceramics with nailbrushes in cold water we got our first hands-on-experience  as excavators. Tomorrow at dawn you can us with our spades at the Broglio excavating site

Our genours hosts from Passagi association, Caterina de Nardi and husband Franco Mangone welcomed us to their home for a delicious Sunday pranzo with many traditional local dispens.

Due to network failures it is not possible to send pictures rigt now to illustrate our experienses.

Looking forward to another day!

Ciao!

Long time no hear from us. Well, we have been kept busy by work at the digging place
"lo scavo" which lies on the top of a hill, the Broglio. Already we have been introduced to
the different phases of digging by Prof. Allessandro Vanzetti from the University of
Rome. We have vacuum cleaned the digging site, a dwelling from the Middle Bronze Age, and we have followed the detailed measuring of the area, centimetre by centimetre. A lot
of patience is required not to miss out on anything.

Another quality that we have discovered in the people here is their passion for their roots
and the preservation of their culture. It demonstrates itself in different ways of volontary work and in the individual collections of items that have been the starting point for local museums. Museo Ludovico Noia, a museum in the old city center of Trebisacce demonstrating items such as oil presses used by small farmers for hundreds of years.
The museum in the nearby town of Amendolara is another example of one man's passion of collecting items from Bronze Ages to show future generations where they come from.

Days of digging are followed by days of work at the laboratory where among other things
we have been labelling pieces of ceramics.

Our horizons have been broadened by a visit to the nearby city of Cosenza, where we participated in a seminariet the University concerning volontary work among immigrants teaching them languages and other useful skills.
At the city museum, Museo dei Brettii e degli Enotri we discovered that our friends from the digging site professor Vanzetti and doktor Schiappelli have left their traces in the form of video installations, both informativa and attractive.

Other highlights to be mentioned are the making of "salsa di pomodoro" at Caterina's house and reception by the Mayor. Yesterday a fantastic pranzo at the home of Betty and Lino together with Isabella and Giusy, also Passaggi members.
Today a peaceful Sunday at the beach.
